At first glance this appears to be a French M1866. It has the champhered mortise slot. But it is totally unmarked. And there is no front rivet. On close inspection you can see on the spring side of the grip where the front rivet hole has been filled in with brass. There is no evidence of a hole at all on the other side. Bayonets like this were made by Civilian sources on an emergency basis during the crisis of the Franco-Prussian war. There is a slight wiggle to the blade since it has no front rivet. The blade is very nice. The cross guard has moderate pitting. The spring is heavily pitted. These are very scarce.
