Wonderfully crude. The socket is short with a 3 step mortise slot with a very short third step. It is configured for top stud. The socket seam is underneath the attachment shield- a very American system. The blade is triangular- hollow ground on the bottom two faces and flat on the top face. I just love this bayonet- so very crude but functional. It could easily be earlier and from the French and Indian war time period. I?m calling the condition good due to the old pitting and a cracked shank. But the patina on this is smooth and wonderful. Really a nice example of this type.
