Reference: Wheeler pg 141 & 145
Super rare item. This was originally a Saxon Police sword for Senior NCO. It has a lion head pommel and sharkskin grip. The original sword can be seen on pg 141 of Wheeler (Item 1877 in the ACS catalog). The blade was shortened to 33 cm in the Nazi era. The D guard has been removed leaving a short up turned quillon. The upper end of the guard has been left in the lions mouth and shaped slightly to form a tongue. Never seen anything like it it waggles slightly in the lion?s mouth. The blade has a narrow fuller near the back edge of the blade. The scabbard has the original fittings with an acorn frog stud. Marked S.P.L.8 (for Leipzig) on the bottom of the guard. The scabbard has shrunk slightly and doesn?t accept the blade completely. Stitching open on the back.
