Reference: Mery- Les Sabres-Baionnettes Chassepot Et Remington pg 21
In the 1860s France began trials to select a new infantry weapon. These trials led to the development of the Chassepot rifle. By 1866 the competition was down to two main contenders. The Camp de Chalons- an early bolt action and the 1865 Vincennes Carbine- a percussion muzzle loader. 100 Vincennes carbines and bayonets were ordered in 1866 and this is one of those. Numbered 280 in the channel. It has a muzzle ring diamter of 18.5 mm and an internal spring latching system. Dated 1866 on the back of the blade. The bayonet is in excellent condition. The scabbard is from a Chassepot.
